I have a long history of working in the pharmaceutical / biotechnology sector, mainly in the new drug discovery field with an emphasis on natural products from microbial and fungal sources. My favorite field of specialization is in the anti-infective and anti-cancer therapeutics area. I am more of a generalist with a firm background in a range of scientific disciplines (chemical and biological), so I would be best utilized in a position that requires communication in (and troubleshooting of) research efforts across multidisciplinary lines.Specialties: Extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment (HPLC, MS, LC-MS, and NMR) and in the interpretation of spectral data for structure elucidation of unknown chemical entities. I am a very talented chromatography specialist, and can contribute effectively to any analytical research endeavor. I am also conversant in organic chemistry (synthetic methodology and medicinal chemistry) as well as biological screening, pharmacology, and early drug development.

I was involved in the planning, layout, and build-out of laboratory space, as well as the acquisition and set-up of major analytical chemistry equipment (LC-MS and NMR). I was a key member of the team that implemented a fermentation protocol, extraction process, and screening paradigm. The raw materials included a diverse set of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi from around the world) and we were successful in identifying a number of interesting leads using a capillary electrophoresis screening platform. -

I spent most of my time isolating biologically active materials from fermentation cultures, many of which demonstrated some level of efflux pump inhibition (an entirely new field at that time). Microcide was a fantastic place to work and really fostered an environment of collaboration, scholarship, and mission. They were really on to some interesting leads, so it was truly unfortunate that they stumbled late in the game and eventually folded.

The combination of the NMR and MS labs was where the "chemical truth" was told about synthetic leads in drug discovery. It was interesting work from a service/client point of view and provided an opportunity to observe the multitude of research projects, but became rather routine in operation. This is where I really learned to interpret an NMR spectrum!

Syntex was a great place to work, and showed pride in being a medium-size full pharma outfit with a "mom-and-pop shop" attitude. You can't beat the Palo Alto area for charm. I was hired in to help set up a new natural products chemistry laboratory, from shakers and incubators to HPLCs and Ito Coils. We just got the darn thing running when the bottom fell out of natural products research industry-wide, and subsequently Syntex was acquired by Roche.
