About Andrew Stern

Andrew is an innovator in the design and engineering of conversational AI agents, AR/VR apps, personality-rich virtual characters and interactive stories. He is co-founder of Playabl, a dev team available for contract-based projects. In 2005 Andrew co-created the interactive drama Façade, described as "the future of video games" by The New York Times, with 5M+ downloads, winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Slamdance Independent Games Festival, exhibited at IGF, GDC, Future of Storytelling and more. Recent work includes public-facing/internal XR & AI projects for Meta Reality Labs, Amazon Studios, Niantic, T-Mobile, Hasbro and Intel, with Nexus Studios, Hexagram.io, Instrument, dotdotdash, downstream, and Inscape Studios. In 2012 Andrew worked at the Center for Games and Playable Media at UC Santa Cruz on the Strategic Social Interactions Program (SSIM), aka "Good Stranger", a DARPA funded $37M multi-year R&D effort to train police and military recruits to use less force when interacting with civilians. With social scientists and computer scientists, Andrew designed, wrote and engineered lifelike interactive characters with social, pedagogical and dramatic intelligence, integrated with gesture and speech recognition.In 2008 Andrew founded the studio Stumptown Game Machine as a developer for ngmoco to build next-generation games for the iPhone. Our first title, Touch Pets Dogs, was the #1 free app in the App Store in November 2009. In 2010 Stumptown was acquired by ngmoco.Andrew was a key member of the Virtual Dogz, Catz and Babyz projects at PF.Magic (1995-1999, 3M+ sold worldwide), combining AI with real-time interactive computer animation. Andrew was also a full-time researcher at Zoesis Studios and USC's Institute for Creative Technologies. Andrew has published and presented work at conferences on AI, interactive art and digital games, and was a co-writer of the group blog grandtextauto.org.
