At the leading centre of expertise on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, I advised companies across sectors on embedding responsible business practices, designing governance, undertaking stakeholder engagement, and implementing meaningful human rights due diligence. I co-ran consultations worldwide that led to the creation of the UN Guiding Principles Reporting Framework, that paved the way for double materiality. I advised major companies such as Unilever, Nestlé, H&M and Ericsson on their piloting of the new human rights reporting expectations. I developed human rights guidance for corporate boards, advised legal departments on integrating corporate responsibility, trained investors on enhancing ethical business conduct, and conducted extensive stakeholder engagement across Myanmar.

At this global pro bono law firm nominated for the Nobel peace prize, I provided legal counsel to governments and opposition groups worldwide on peace mediation, post-conflict constitution drafting, and implementing human rights and transitional justice standards. I directed offices in Libya, Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire, leading trainings for government officials, civil society, human rights defenders, and tribal leaders on constitutional reform, electoral processes, and international law, and advised on key reforms. I advised on international and human rights issues such as devolution of power, land reform, constitutional human rights protections and balance of power. I led the New York office and briefed UN Security Council members and Embassies on international legal issues. I supported peacebuilding efforts, including advising on international law options for democracy in Myanmar, conducting transitional justice analyses in Côte d’Ivoire, and supporting opposition efforts in Zimbabwe.

As pro bono attorney then consultant to John Ruggie, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Business and Human Rights, I delved into how human rights due diligence differs from other forms of corporate due diligence, to feed into the second pillar of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. I delved into how national corporate and securities laws were evolving to reflect responsible business conduct expectations, to feed into the first pillar of the UN Guiding Principles. I explored what we could learn from enterprise risk management, corporate organizational change and due diligence practices to feed into the development of the UN Guiding Principles. I helped convene expert consultations on the international, regional and national legal frameworks governing corporate respect for human rights.

I represented U.S. and multinational clients in national and cross-border M&A, joint ventures, private equity, and venture capital transactions, providing end-to-end legal counsel from due diligence to contract drafting and regulatory compliance. I advised boards of directors on business structures, fiduciary duties, corporate responsibility, and shareholder resolutions, including compliance with U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission rules for cross-border transactions. Notable transactions included advising Semafo on acquiring a mining company in Ghana, PT Pertamina on acquiring BP interests in Indonesia, and Sanofi on its acquisition of a U.S. pharmaceutical company.

I founded and led the International Law Pro Bono Group at the firm's New York office, managing a team of 12 lawyers to provide international law advice to clients such as the Grameen Bank and Professor John Ruggie. I received the firm’s Pro Bono Service Award for creating its best new pro bono team and was twice recognized as an Empire State Counsel Honoree by the New York State Bar Association for impactful work supporting those unable to afford legal counsel.

As a legal and governance specialist focused on the Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal primary education, I advised the World Bank and bilateral donor agencies on strengthening the legal frameworks and governance structures of international organizations, partnerships, and trust funds to align more effectively with global development objectives. My work included providing strategic guidance on adapting operational policies and governance mechanisms to enhance accountability and maximize the impact of funding in support of education initiatives. I also supported the management of two major World Bank education trust funds, overseeing contributions of $1.3 billion and $90 million from 20 donors, with allocations directed to 28 countries across Africa and Asia to promote access to quality education.

I analyzed jurisprudence to track the evolution of international law, providing advisory insights to the War Crimes Research Office. This work involved examining key legal principles in international criminal justice, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and their application in precedents.

As a Research Assistant, I conducted due diligence for prominent mergers and acquisitions cases, assisting in the evaluation of legal and financial risks. I drafted memoranda for business clients on key corporate governance issues, including the rights, powers, and duties of officers, directors, and shareholders, helping them navigate complex legal frameworks. Over the course of two summer apprenticeships, I prepared legal arguments for a class action lawsuit on behalf of veterans against the Minister of Defense, contributing to the development of the case strategy and legal approach.
