Loading Docs is a unique initiative that produces short documentaries that captivate and inspire audiences locally and internationally, while developing and promoting New Zealand filmmaking talent.Through a competitive selection process, Loading Docs selects ten short documentary proposals, which are then supported from development through to distribution. Working with local and international mentors, Loading Docs filmmakers expand their skills in a range of areas including story development, outreach, publicity and marketing and distribution.The documentaries are freely available to view and share online and are available to view and share from this website and on TVNZ. Loading Docs is a Notable Pictures initiative, founded by Julia Parnell and Anna Jackson, and funded by NZ On Air with the support of the New Zealand Film Commission and Te Māngai Pāho.

My role as an innovation coach for the Youth Flourishing in North Auckland Challenge involves supporting a team of innovators by walking alongside them as they participate in a 5 month innovation challenge. As a Senior Lecturer in Art and Design I developed, taught and led courses in the Design Thinking minor in the School of Art and Design and AUT. The Design Thinking minor offers students opportunities to develop collaborative, creative and critical thinking skills through project-led learning, with a focus on social impact.I taught on a number of courses in the minor, but led the design, development and delivery of two papers in particular: Design Thinking Practices (DESN600) and Design Storytelling (DESN604).Design Thinking Practices introduced students to practices, mindsets, tools and methods used in Design Thinking and Human-Centred design. Over the course of 12 weeks, students worked in small groups on a complex real-world problem, moving through stages of investigation/discovery, reframing, ideation and prototyping and testing before presenting design solutions or responses.Design Storytelling invited students to delve deeper into design thinking tools and methods through storytelling. As well as extending knowledge of tools such as personas, journey mapping and prototyping, students experimented with visual storytelling and data visualisation and were introduced to futures thinking and design fiction as a mode of speculative design.As a supervisor, reviewer and examiner I have worked with a wide range of students and projects that require expertise in Design Thinking/Human Centred Design, and Media and Communications (storytelling, transmedia, interactive media, media ecology). I have completed successful nine Masters supervisions and supervised four PhD projects. Many of the projects I have supervised take a creative or practice-led approach.

Innovate Change (now Innovation Unit NZ) was a not-for-profit social enterprise that used creative and participatory approaches to build social connectedness that enables youth development, positive ageing and whānau well-being. At Innovate Change I worked on a variety of projects including an initiative aimed a reducing alcohol related harm in young people; customer experience mapping for a nationwide youth organisation; and co-creation of a competency framework for Healthy Families NZ. I was the primary lead for Generations, an initiative aimed at building the social connectedness of older people (https://innovate-change.squarespace.com/generations).As a project lead I designed and facilitated co-design workshops and processes, undertook participatory research, developed and presented insights and prototypes and managed complex projects.

The ProjectThe Department of Physics at the University of Auckland, Auckland Live and Auckland University of Technology’s Colab, started a new partnership in 2014 recognising the lack of engagement, particularly amongst young people, in many areas of physics. While physics plays a fundamental role in our everyday lives, the theory is complex and can seem impenetrable to those outside of the field.From March to December 2015, a team of mentors and students from each institution worked together to address this issue by pooling resources to create a learning experience that is both accessible and informative. Beambox is the result of this unique collaboration, aiming to spark interest in the science of the physical world by encouraging collective play. The focus of the project this year is “Light Science and its Applications” in response to the UN-proclaimed International Year of Light in 2015. Beambox was installed at the heart of Auckland City, at Aotea Square during December 2015.My RoleMentor to students working on a transmedia strategy for the project. Students developed characters relating to qualities in the light spectrum, which were assigned to cubes in the physical installation. A website and programme of public events was also developed.

Innovation and Change in Aotearoa New Zealand’s Documentary Production Ecology 2010-2013.This thesis presents a detailed analysis of New Zealand’s documentary production ecology during the period 2010 – 2013, focusing on innovation, change and the function(s) of documentary as a creative and cultural industry. Drawing on interviews, observation, practice-led research and analysis of theatrical and television documentary output, the framework of ecology is used to examine the specific conditions of documentary production in New Zealand as a complex media system in relation to global shifts in media production, distribution and use.

The Screen Edge Forum is an annual Film, TV and All Media industry event focused on innovative ways to create and fund all kinds of screen production. It includes seminars, panels, master-classes, and a pitching forum. The Forum is a place to update your tool-box with cutting-edge ideas and network with local and international professionals and experts.The Forum is an industry event, held during the Documentary Edge Festival. It brings together local and overseas filmmakers/industry to share, network and learn from each other. It also aims to bring a business side to proceedings by facilitating local filmmakers to present their ideas to potential local and international funders, buyers, broadcasters and festival programmers.
