Showrunner. Writer. Producer. Scholar.Two passions dominate the professional and personal life of Anthony Sparks: Arts/Entertainment and Education. Originally from a single parent home on the South Side of Chicago, Anthony began his career as a classically trained stage actor based in New York City. After a decade as an actor, performing in "Stomp" on Broadway, off-Broadway, and in classical theatre roles in regional theaters around the country, he transitioned from performing and playwriting in New York to television writing and producing in Los Angeles-- while also beginning and completing doctoral work in the acclaimed Department of American Studies & Ethnicity at USC (University of Southern California). Dr. Sparks has authored published articles and essays and is committed to teaching, mentoring, and consulting whenever he can — while also working in the entertainment industry as a writer, producer, and showrunner.Among other credits, Anthony served as the longtime Showrunner, Executive Producer, and writer for six seasons on the critically acclaimed television drama "Queen Sugar" (created by Ava DuVernay and Executive Produced by Oprah Winfrey for OWN). Anthony worked alongside DuVernay on “Queen Sugar” as a key writer & producer since the beginning of the series.Anthony also recently signed a first look deal with Blumhouse Television & Films. Together, Anthony and Blumhouse are developing several television drama series, the first of which ("CHOIR") sold in a competitive situation to Disney+. Recently, Sparks received the 2022 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Drama for his work as the showrunner on the 5th & 6th seasons of “Queen Sugar.” He also received the 2020 Television Academy Honors Award for his work as showrunner on Queen Sugar’s 4th season. In addition, Sparks has been nominated for four NAACP Image Awards for writing and producing television over the last 12 years. Also in 2017, he was nominated for the Image Award in the literary categories for his work as the co-editor and author of the academic book "Running the Long Race in Gifted Education." Anthony is thankful to be an alumnus of several industry and academic fellowships, including the ABC/Disney Writing Fellowship, Warner Bros.
