• Provided a 12-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program through the lens of socialjustice, rooted in the Civil Rights movement, to 10 English Learning youth in grades 6-8.• Integrated positive youth engagement strategies in the classroom to lead students through age-appropriate social-emotional learning.• Developed lesson plans in the 5 key areas of an Integrated Reading Curriculum; high qualityacademic enrichment, parent and family development, civic engagement and social action,intergenerational leadership development, and nutrition/health/mental well-being.Freedom School is a secular six-week summer literacy program offered to students from Somerville. Rooted in the civil rights movement, the Freedom School creates a sense of hope, empowerment, and social justice. We sought to build strong, literate, and empowered children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation and world today. By providing summer reading enrichment for children who might otherwise not have access to books.
