In this position I worked with a team to ensure that we were able to supply patrons with the food that they need despite the extra challenges of the pandemic. I communicated directly with patrons in order to meet their dietary preferences and needs, answer any questions they had, and connect them to our other programs. In a typical week, we served hundreds of people in the community by distributing thousands of pounds of food.

Guatemala

In the Peace Corps I worked with local members of the Guatemalan school system to improve community health with a focus on sanitation, nutrition, teenage pregnancy prevention, and STI prevention. In the course of this position I trained school directors and teachers to teach health topics in their classrooms using techniques designed to produce behavior change. I also worked with the ministry of health and other local representatives to monitor and refine the implementation of a more nutritionally balanced school snack program. Finally, I worked with the ministry of agriculture to implement school gardens with the goal of increasing the variety of nutritious foods available to the schoolchildren.

Nicaragua

I trained to work as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a community health project in Nicaragua. The training included opportunities to work in women's health clinics and schools to promote healthy behaviors related to teenage pergnancy prevention, maternal and child health, and STI prevention. My position did not continue because the post closed due to political violence.

Bloomington, Indiana Area

As a VISTA intern at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard my goal was to improve food security for low income people in Bloomington, Indiana. My role at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard included nutrition and garden education, management of weekly and monthly activities, and promotion of the resources that Mother Hubbard's Cupboard offers.
