Why choose just one when you can have both?Combining my passion for statistical analysis with the future practicality/power of computer science, I ventured onto a data science major. My name is Austin Chen, and as an undergraduate student, researcher, collaborator, and leader at the University of Michigan, I hope to continue to hone my learned skills in DS, while experiencing the versatility of its applications.As a senior in the EECS (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) department, I logically have a vested interest in the field of software, specifically, the analytical power of data science. However, with my long standing fascination for NASA as well as all-things space related, I am also pursuing a Climate and Space Sciences Engineering minor through the CLASP department. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic hindrance of the past few years, I was able to procure a multitude of research opportunities related to my areas of expertise - Data and Climate. Through the School for Environment and Sustainability, I modeled Ice Coverage on the Great Lakes using machine learning techniques (research paper in drafting), as well as consolidated water level data for the US Army Corps of Engineerings to utilize. To further pursue my areas of interests, I joined the Michigan Data Science Team (MDST) and the Collaborative Lab for Advancing Work in Space (CLAWS). MDST served as another platform to enhance my statistical modeling and data mining abilities, while CLAWS introduced me to artificial intelligence and its coordination with augmented reality and web systems.
