Contract - Quest Authentication Services / Vastool Reverse EngineerCorteva Agriscience Sep 2022 - Dec 2022Indianapolis, Indiana, UsCorteva Agriscience combines industry-leading innovations, high-touch customer engagement, and operational execution to profitably deliver solutions for the world’s most pressing agriculture challenges; operating some of the most recognized brands in agriculture and a technology pipeline positions the company to maximize productivity for farmers. Quest Authentication Services, known as vastool, allows Unix and Linux clients to join Microsoft Windows Active Directory domains, accessing and modifying information about users, groups, and systems in AD via LDAP calls. This short-term project required me to reverse-engineer the functionality of vastool in the Corteva environment. They had extensive BASH scripts built around their AD integration. I recreated vastool in Python, allowing them to drop commercial licenses for established open-source products that rely on LDAP to integrate into their Windows Active Directory environment. -
Team Lead - Content Migration ManagerGcp Migrations Nov 2020 - May 2022Google Professional Services offers onboarding services for companies migrating their existing infrastructure into Google Cloud Platform (GCP).The primary goal of this contract was to migrate the computing systems from all of the Nokia Corporation’s private data centers (80+) into the Google Cloud Platform public cloud. I oversaw the “Non-X86” migrations, including Solaris/Sparc platforms, HP-UX, Vax/VMS, and Tru64. The project involved using an Agile process to plan, document, and migrate existing legacy systems into Google Cloud GCE/GCVE environments. To solve this problem, I leveraged Ansible and the Terraform CI/CD automation pipeline to create and configure VPC peering, new Red Hat Linux hosts for the Stromasys Charon emulators, and the IAM (RBAC) credentials needed for the environment. My team then took the migration and backup procedures I authored to migrate the legacy systems into the cloud. These tasks involved discovery, performance management, team leadership, application and system migration, downtime planning across multiple teams, data transfer planning, troubleshooting, and procedure hand-offs to the maintenance team that followed.

Linux ConsultantEastern Research Group, Inc. (Erg) Jan 2017 - Nov 2019Lexington, Ma, UsAfter a catastrophic failure of one of their research systems, I was asked to help them rebuild and restore their environment. I implemented a VMWare ESXi hypervisor, hosting CentOS and Ubuntu servers that allowed them to have a robust environment that was not dependent on hardware. Picking up and migrating these vital systems to different hardware can now be quickly done. Advancing forward, we implemented a proper and complete backup solution and early detection of hardware and OS failures. -
Senior Linux Systems Engineer / Cyber-Security EngineerKeller Williams Realty, Inc. Jul 2017 - Aug 2019Austin, Tx, UsKeller Williams Realty, Inc. is the world’s largest real estate franchise by agent count and most abundant in the US by units sold and sales volume. At the core of the KW infrastructure-paradigm was three Java environments (two versions of GlassFish, plus JBoss/WildFly), each with its own life cycle environment. A combination of Oracle (running on Oracle Enterprise Linux/OEL), and MySQL database servers, clustered ActiveMQ servers, and large LDAP environments. Front-ending these environments was a combination of WAF (Incapsula, replaced with CloudFlare), Cisco ASA firewall, A10 Load Balancers, and Nginx web servers on CentOS, and RHEL systems hosted in vSphere clusters spread across two data centers. All maintenance was managed by Spacewalk (Satellite), and Foreman.I spent most of my time at Keller Williams focused on supporting their Java environments in addition to two primary projects. My first goal was to stabilize the situation by converting all system monitoring from Zenoss to LogicMonitor. In doing so, I took their environment from an uptime rate of around 50% to the industry standard of 99.999%. The last year I was there, I took on a project management position, implementing their cybersecurity update initiative. Working directly for the Director of Information Security, I identified internal and external vulnerabilities in the environment. Balancing the PEN testing results with Agile methodology and a hands-on approach, I built out the Jira plan and implemented the most substantial infrastructure security update in the company’s history. I initiated the project by replacing back-end supporting systems of ActiveMQ, LDAP, Solr, and MySQL, leading to the end goal of upgrading end-of-life web servers and Java Glassfish servers. Overall I planned with and coordinated Dev and QA teams to implement 15 years’ worth of security updates and configuration management audits over the course of a year. -
Consultant - Cloud Engineer / Linux Engineer / Network Administrator / Database EngineerKiddoemr / Cedar Park Pediatrics Sep 2016 - Jul 2017I was contracted to build and implement a migration project for Cedar Park Pediatrics, replacing their outdated system with a new geo-redundant environment while maintaining HIPAA/HITECH requirements. Implementing VMWare hypervisors in both their office and an out-of-state data center gave them the peace of mind that fully redundant environments provide. All data from their databases to their document repository were kept live and encrypted at both locations.Along the way, I increased their IT security, migrated their existing database of patients, and helped them deal with the headaches of maintaining a custom software solution. When they determined that their Open Source project (KiddoEMR) was not up to the task moving forward, I automated the screen capture of over 5000 patients and related documentation using Selenium.KiddoEMR was an open-sourced Electronic Medical Records initiative owned by Cedar Park Pediatrics. Unfortunately, they had been residing on an outdated release of Debian Linux without redundancy. The project I laid out involved upgrading their existing environment, including virtualizing their production servers and creating a sandboxed development environment for their programmers. Their production environment was migrated to two Geo-redundant locations, utilizing Percona’s Active-Active MySQL server. Both environments are always in a ready state, allowing them to use both servers in real-time without the fear of losing data.

Consultant - Linux Engineer / Network Administrator / Database AdministratorT2 Technical Services Jul 2013 - Apr 2017T2 provides SaaS products, and is a VAR for Nurse Call systems deployed in several prominent large nursing and hospital chains. One service they add is statistical analyses of patient interactions and monitoring. Facilitating this service required using Python and Perl scripting to adapt HL7 streams from ASCOM and Vocera systems to feed data into redundant Linux collection points hosted on VMWare clusters in Geo-redundant data centers and AWS EC2 systems. All network connections were facilitated by Cisco IPSEC VPN, OpenVPN, or a proprietary Raspberry Pi data gateway I designed to handle asynchronous encrypted streaming. We occasionally deployed virtual guests at the client sites to facilitate synchronous and asynchronous MySQL database replication between the client and the processing servers. As with all medical environments, HIPAA and HITECH standards were regularly audited and maintained.

Consultant - Linux Engineer / Network Administrator / Database AdministratorEgovernment Solutions Inc Mar 2010 - Dec 2015Alexandria, Va, UsAs a Linux consultant, I brought stability and redundancy to an environment spread across the state of Tennessee. Reliability was the primary focus for the centralized servers in Knoxville, connecting to county seats spread over Tennessee. In an environment that, at peak times, can see millions of dollars worth of transactions per day, downtime is not an option. I built a robust ecosystem by leveraging VMware and EC2 systems, Debian Linux, a custom LAMP stack, and VPN networks, all configured for extreme performance while maintaining PCI Compliance. -
Consultant - Senior Linux Engineer / Senior Solaris AdministratorMyriad Development Oct 2011 - Jan 2013I architected an updated hardware environment and migrated their existing Solaris Sparc servers into new CentOS web servers and an Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) database server. They were constrained by their 10-year-old Sparc environment, with no path for growth and rising maintenance costs. I helped them lay out a pathway to migrate their development, staging, training, and production environment to the new hardware. Working with their in-house development team, we migrated their homegrown software and the AOL Web Server package to Linux, creating a high-availability cluster of four web/tomcat servers. Later, I migrated all their physical servers to a VMware cluster environment, reducing their space, cooling, and power consumption.

Consultant - Linux Engineer / Database AdministratorMrsec.Com Sep 2009 - Dec 2012MrSEC was a popular sporting news website that ran on Debian, utilizing WordPress and MySQL. They had to deal with the trials and tribulations of instant success from their viral news stories. My duties generally included Debian Linux and MySQL administration, Firewall configuration, Apache tuning, and mitigation of Denial Of Service and Dictionary attacks.I moved their site from a single instance virtual host to a dedicated ESXi server. I Deployed multiple virtual instances dedicated to Apache, MySQL, and Varnish Cache to alleviate the heavy load from increased traffic. This significantly stabilized their environment and prepared them for the next big push in sporting news.

Solaris Engineer / Project LeadPearson Education Jun 2000 - May 2001London, GbMy position as Project Lead and System Administrator required me to screen, hire, and manage six programmers and a dozen Sun workstations while filling in for programming gaps. The project was to port a proprietary software package written in seven different languages, from Sun OS to Sun Solaris. To say the least, this was a programming fiasco. My time was split between coordinating programmers in several states, discovering how this package was put together, and straightening out the code. Once we finished porting the software, I implemented the new Ultra-Sparc 5’s and an Ultra Enterprise 250 into the existing environment with minimal downtime. -
