Research & Programmatic Consultant providing assistance to international development projects and domestic initiatives working to counter disinformation and promote good governance. 2 years experience as expert democracy assistance consultant, 3 years of experience in database research, and 3 years in human rights advocacy. Seeking to utilize data-driven insights to improve and implement programs working to bolster human security and strengthen democratic functioning. Specialized in communicating research findings to non-expert audiences, conducting training and political education, strategic and systems thinking. Regional expertise in the Americas, Middle East and North Africa, and Europe. I am driven to empower the marginalized to take action, in Hannah Arendt’s sense, to more effectively advocate for their interests. My perspective on democracy in the U.S. and abroad connects democratic theory, conflict studies, and race and ethnic studies literature with my lived experience as a white Jewish man from an overwhelmingly white Christian rural place moving to DC, teaching predominantly Black students at the DC Jail, and participating in Black liberation uprisings and other pro-democracy activism. I draw on institutionalism, conflict analysis, and political economy to understand political events and imagine and critique political alternatives.Over my career, I’ve worked as an advocate, a researcher, a writer, and a teacher. While I’ve found I can be adaptable and serve well in diverse roles, I believe I can best serve movements for justice and democracy by imagining, researching, and articulating policies and institutions that deepen democracy and advance racial and economic justice. To serve this purpose while not being directly employed to do so, I write weekly pieces on my blog at populo.substack.com. Topically, my expertise includes US political and electoral institutions, comparative political institutions in democracies, worker power, Middle East politics, especially Israel, Palestine, and the Arab Gulf states, and peacebuilding. Some of my professional skills include writing literature reviews, conducting quantitative studies, writing persuasive and nonpartisan articles, teaching, and coalition-building.
