Her oeuvre reflects an artistic journey where art and form intertwine, giving birth to profound ideas in the process of creation. Her work invites viewers into a world where material possessions become vessels for profound introspection and sublime beauty. As a young art student in the 1970s, Segal embarked on a life-changing adventure, leaving New York to explore Paris and Italy for 4 years. It was there, surrounded by cathedrals and statues, that Ségal's passion for the sublime was ignited. Influenced by the art and architecture of the Renaissance, Byzantine, and Baroque periods, which shaped her artistic vision and inspired her lifelong dedication to technique and creativity. In her Designer Handbag Series, Ségal delves into Renaissance art and architecture with a series of Birkin bags. Inspired by Venetian cathedrals and Byzantine churches, she infuses each bag with historical and cultural significance. Ségal's collection juxtaposes the status of the Birkin bag with the sanctity of religious and architectural masterpieces, prompting viewers to contemplate the connections between consumer culture and sacred reverence.Ségal's recent artistic endeavors explore societal values and materialism through playful yet profound expressions. One such series features old fashioned lunchboxes adorned with the Louis Vuitton and Barbara Ségal initials, embodying nostalgia and whimsy while offering reflections on our collective obsessions. Through a fusion of stone and satire, Ségal prompts contemplation of the enduring question central to her artistic journey: how do we define and allocate value in our lives? Show less
