I am an experienced Basketball Coach and Trainer with a philosophy centered on player development through deliberate practice. My approach is based on the scientific principle that focused effort and repetition over time are the keys to learning any skill. By emphasizing the components of deliberate practice, including stretch goals, max effort, max concentration, immediate feedback, and reps with refinement and reflection, I help players improve their skills efficiently.I believe that player development requires deliberate practice. As basketball trainers, we have a responsibility to help our players reach their full potential. By implementing the components of deliberate practice in our training sessions, we can help our players become the best they can be on and off the court. In my training sessions, we set stretch goals for each player based on their expectations of their current or next-level team, depending on whether it's preseason, in season, or offseason. These goals are measurable, realistic, and just outside the player's current ability. As the player improves, new goals are formed, and deadlines are set to track progress. We use time, score, and an amount of a particular skill to encourage and monitor progress.I push players outside their comfort zone by using Just Manageable Challenges with game actions, which are drills that have a goal just outside the player's ability. Every rep is done at max effort, but players also need proper rest between reps and drills. Stress plus rest equals growth. Techniques to ensure max effort and concentration include using singular focus on micro-skills, visualization, and verbal cues.Immediate feedback is crucial for player improvement, and I provide constant cues and feedback during drills, using bullet points and visual cues. This allows for drill flow, and the player should instantly know what needs adjusting.Repetition with refinement and reflection is the final component of deliberate practice. After each rep, trainers evaluate the skill and help the player refine it. Reflection allows players to learn from their mistakes and make adjustments for the next rep. By emphasizing the components of deliberate practice, I help players improve their skills efficiently and reach their full potential.
