I'm a national reporter at The 19th based in the Midwest. I'm also on leave from work until the start of March 2024.I cover state politics and voting, with a focus on inequities. I'm particularly interested in writing about how policymakers make decisions that impact people, and the complicated pipeline for more diverse representation in elected office.I previously covered health care at The Des Moines Register, where I wrote about the beginning effects of the coronavirus pandemic in Iowa through the lens of government accountability. I have extensive experience covering politics, including in a statehouse setting. I covered the Democratic race for president in Iowa in 2019 and 2020, including as a lead reporter on the candidacies of Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg.I worked at The Associated Press in multiple bureaus for a decade, first as an editorial assistant then later becoming one of the wire service's statehouse reporters.I care deeply about how the news industry will evolve to become a more inclusive place for journalists of color.
