Belle Torek is an attorney and scholar of online speech issues who works at the intersection of free expression, digital safety, and civil rights. She currently serves as Senior Fellow, AI & Tech Advocacy at the Human Rights Campaign, where her subject matter expertise informs HRC's tech policy strategy around social media, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. In addition to her work with HRC, Torek holds affiliate roles with All Tech Is Human and UNC Chapel Hill’s Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP), and she is a member of the Coalition for Independent Tech Research.Before her tenure at HRC, Torek served as Associate Director, Technology Policy at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and as officer to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Media and Democracy program. She has also served as a legal fellow to the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, where she supported legislative drafting efforts and advised social media platforms on their cyber-harassment and hate speech policies. Her expertise has been shared through publications, speaking engagements, and university lectures, including through Tech Policy Press and at Yale Law School.A champion of community engagement and solidarity, Torek has taken on several volunteer roles and board positions in support of her profession and communities. She currently serves on the WAYE Talks advisory board, where she educates young professionals on ethics and diversity in tech. Her past board positions include terms as Development Committee Chair to both the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) and the Aqua Foundation By and For LGBTQ+ Women. She has also served on the DEI committee at Knight Foundation and as an IBIS mentor to LGBTQ+ students at the University of Miami. In recognition of her contributions to the field, Torek was named one of Legacy Magazine’s 2022 40 Under 40 Black Leaders of Today and Tomorrow, and in 2023, she was honored as one of the University of Miami’s 30 Under 30 recipients.
