About Ben C.
I am a cell biologist/geneticist working at the Dept of Biochemistry, University of Oxford. I am an MSCA European Postdoctoral Fellow (2023-24) and Junior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford (2022-25). I graduated in 2016 with BSc Biomedical Science (Biochemistry) and PhD (Biochemistry) from the University of Galway. I have a strong interest in chromosome structure and function, particularly the centromere for both basic and applied synthetic chromosome biology. I trained as a fly geneticist during my PhD working on centromere asymmetry in stem cell divisions, and now as a postdoc in human cells where I build centromeres from scratch on chromosomes.

Msca European Postdoctoral Fellow
CurrentI study how chromosome segregation is coordinated during cell division by the centromere. My project, funded by the UKRI MSCA funding guarantee, employs chromosome engineering to build active centromeres from scratch and determine the minimum requirement to do so. My role combines CRISPR-based approaches with genomics and epigenomics to determine where and.
Postdoctoral Researcher
A postdoctoral researcher in the Jansen Lab at the Dept of Biochemistry, University of Oxford. I study how new (neo)centromeres are formed from scratch in a population, and the requirements to keep them there using a combination of biochemical, genome engineering and cell biology approaches.
Junior Research Fellow

Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Research Assistant in the Dunleavy laboratory. Involved in the day-to-day running of the lab - organising stocks, managing orders.Manage my own research project developed from my PhD research. Train and supervise final year undergraduate, masters and early-stage doctoral students.
Researcher Phd Candidate
An Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholar (Irish Research Council) and PhD researcher under the supervision of Dr Elaine Dunleavy at the Centre for Chromosome Biology NUI Galway. I use genetic manipulation and detailed fluorescence microscopy to understand how chromosomes are inherited in adult stem cells, using Drosophila melanogaster germline stem.
