Summer Bridge

In partnership with the UC Berkeley's College Writing Program, Ben taught immersive "step-up" classes designed to aid academically underprepared students for the challenge of college composition. He collaborated with the college writing team to create course content, and he taught, coached, and graded incoming students' writing while mentoring undergraduate tutors affiliated with the program.

Ben was the teacher on record for two entry-level writing classes at UC Berkeley. One class—The Essay Form—explored famous essays and essayists. Another— Apocalyptic Writing—surveyed narratives of apocalypse, both fictional and real. Ben was also the TA for three, upper-division undergraduate English courses.

Ben co-taught a two-unit English course ("Other Voices) in which he and seven undergraduate colleagues developed course content for a semester of weekly discussions on topics surrounding underrepresented groups in literary studies. In September 2006, he became one of two co-coordinators for "Other Voices" and was responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training all participating discussion leaders for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Ben was one among a select group of writing tutors who mentored new writing tutors hired by the Student Learning Center at UC Berkeley. In this role, Ben coached new tutors in monitoring impact, growth, and rapport with their students.
