Profile bio

About Ben C.

After obtaining a MSc in applied physics and an engineering title from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2017, I worked as a Doctoral Student at CERN in collaboration with University of Oslo where I studied plasma wakefield acceleration, lepton colliders and photon colliders. Obtained my PhD in 2021 and I am currently working as a Research Associate at Imperial College London developing a plasma source and diagnostics for the AWAKE experiment at CERN.

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Oslo, Norway

The main focus of this position is start-to-end simulations of high-energy colliders based on plasma wakefield particle acceleration. This involves participating in developing a simulation framework able to integrate different codes and models for simulating the various components of a collider through APIs. Such a framework will allow researchers to choose between accurate and heavy simulations that may require HPC resources, or lightweight and agile simulations that can be run on a single computer. In addition, the position also involves developing simplified numerical models that can be integrated into the simulation framework, as well as using the simulations to optimise machine performance using machine learning processes such as Bayesian optimisation.

Research Associate In Plasma Source Development For Awake

London, England, United Kingdom

Developing next generation plasma-based accelerators in the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science.More specifically, this involves developing and diagnosing plasma sources for the AWAKE experiment at CERN. AWAKE is a proton driven wakefield acceleration experiment that is investigating the use of plasma accelerators for next generation particle colliders.

May 2021 - Feb 2024

Doctoral Student

Meyrin, Geneva, Switzerland

Studied a novel acceleration technology called plasma wakefield acceleration, that has the potential to dramatically decrease the size and cost of current particle accelerators. I used analytical and numerical methods to optimise accelerator parameters taking into account the constraint on efficiency imposed by transverse instabilities. Also used simulations to optimise collider parameters for multi-TeV scale electron-positron colliders and photon colliders.Obtained my PhD in January 2021.

Sep 2017 - Sep 2020

Summer Research Assistant

Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway

- Extended my summer internship into a master's thesis.- Studied light emission from pre-breakdown phenomena in dielectric fluidsthrough experiments. My results support photoionization being a major propagationmechanism.- Observed powerful lightpulses at the onset of pre-breakdown phenomena, which has not been previously reported.
