About Ben Phipps
Experienced educator with experience teaching music and developing curriculum in higher education. My teaching experience includes jazz history, world music, popular music ethnomusicology/musicology and jazz/intercultural performance. My research focuses on the process of cultural hybridity in the development of musical expertise, particularly improvisation in professional jazz musicians and students. In my work I use ethnographic methods, creative practice and musicological analysis. I also have significant experience in gathering and analyzing quantitative data. I also have significant experience in curriculum design as an educational developer in face-to-face, hybrid and online contexts. I have worked university wide but have particular experience in music course improvement and innovation. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Music from UNSW.
