It is also a teaching clinic. The Legal Service aims to help people who are unable to afford private legal assistance and representation or are unable to obtain access to the legal system because of language barriers or other disadvantages.The philosophy at MOLS is that everyone is entitled to free initial advice, even if the problem is not one that can be handled by the Service. MOLS is committed to demystifying the law and empowering clients with a better understanding of the legal system.Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service is part of the Faculty of Law at Monash University. Clients’ matters are run by final year and graduate law students who work under the close supervision of qualified solicitors. These students are exposed to the operation of the law and the legal system in their social context. "The 2015 ‘Just Leadership' Program is an initiative from the Social Justice & Equity Portfolio of the Monash LSS. Now in its sixth year, the program seeks to build from the strengths of previous years by providing two key opportunities for students selected to participate.First, the program allows students the opportunity to affiliate with, learn from and listen to key individuals from various legal backgrounds and organisations that are closely associated with important social justice issues. Bound by a legal focus, participants are invited to engage with guests and organisations that are innovative, practice ethical leadership and promote social justice within the community. From this exposure, students will be able to take a social justice perspective with them into their legal studies and careers. Topics include the rights and laws concerning asylum seekers, refugees, children, women, disabled people, Indigenous Australians, the queer community, and homelessness.Notable individual speakers in previous years have include the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Lieutenant Governor of Victoria, Marilyn Warren AC, QC, Judge Paul Grant SC, Attorney-General Robert Clark, former Attorney-General Rob Hulls and human rights advocate Julian Burnside, QC.Second, participation in the program involves a specific leadership focus. Central to this is the notion of effective change at a community level, which stems from awareness and exposure to unfamiliar ideas and concerns. Introductory and concluding seminars will be focused on key leadership qualities closely associated with social justice and equity themes.
