My thesis title was: "Methods of enhancing the performance of timber beams".My doctoral research project focused on improving and predicting the mechanical performance of Glulam beams. I developed two innovative beam designs to improve material efficiency by increasing stiffness. In one Glulam beam I created a lenticular lamination pattern to align the grain direction to the lines of principal stress and in the other I followed the principal stress paths with steel reinforcing bars.To predict their behaviour I developed a parametric design tool in Excel which calculated the variation in bending and shear stiffness along the beam’s length due to the curved reinforcement and outputted the deflection of beams according to Timoshenko beam theory. I validated the model through physical testing and reviewed the designs’ effectiveness with a carbon assessment tool that I also developed.
