Post-Doctoral Research FellowMaastricht University Oct 2010 - Aug 2014Maastricht Area, NetherlandsCurrently, my research focusses on the influence of exercise/disuse and nutrition on skeletal muscle protein metabolism in humans. Using contemporary and novel stable istotope methodology paired with muscle and blood sampling, we are able to assess whole body and muscle protein metabolism in vivo in humans. Metabolic, enzymatic and molecular analyses are carried out on the muscle tissue to investigate the mechanisms that underpin the regulation of muscle mass in humans. My research has implications for conditions of muscle loss (bed-rest/limb immobilization enforced by illness/injury, age related sarcopenia, muscle wasting conditions), understanding how we gain muscle mass (resistance training, rehabilitation from muscle loss) and the development of nutritional, exercise and/or pharmocological interventions to attenuate muscle loss. -
Phd StudentUniversity Of Nottingham Nov 2006 - Sep 2010Nottingham, UkDuring my PhD my research concerned the integration of fat and carbohydrate metabolism during prolonged exercise, focussing on the effect of altering the availability of muscle co-enzyme A and carnitine on muscle fuel selection during exercise and exercise performance. Part of this research was presented at the European College of Sports Science annual congress in 2010 and achieved a Young Investigator’s Award. -
