As a student learning about environmental challenges from the classroom it can be hard to put into perspective of how we practically protect and/or enhance the environment. I hear about the problems and solutions to pollution, climate change, and environmental regulations that impact people and whole industries on a daily basis. However, it is still difficult to grasp how effective our processes are at handling complex environmental challenges in both government and industry alike. That is why I have set out on a personal mission to learn and experience, first hand, how people are working to practically protect and enhance the environment we all live in.Through my journey I first worked as a pesticide applicator (ironic right?) during the summer before my senior year of high school. This was my first venture into complying with environmental regulations when it came to pesticide use. I avoided pollinator areas and ensured that I was using best practices to prevent runoff. I gained a bigger appreciation for how much even one individual can impact the environment through their job, either for better or worse. After my freshman year of college, I got in touch with the U.S. Forest Service to maintain and survey trails for potential hazards. I made sure that trails would be safer and better maintained so that people could enjoy their time out in nature. This is where I found my pride for public service and service to the environment. However, I still felt like there were other environmental positions that would have an even greater impact on peoples' lives and the environment. During my sophomore year of college I found a position at INDOT that would focus on the NEPA process, and better yet, it was located close to my hometown. I worked for INDOT, writing environmental documents, conducting field work, and utilizing analytical and research skills to understand the impact that state transportation projects will have on the environment. This opportunity has developed my professional skills like no other experience I've had before, while also giving me the opportunity to serve the public. As I enter my junior year of college and beyond I am looking to further my experiences in the environmental sector. I want to continue my journey in the environmental sector, and continue my quest to learn how people protect and enhance the environment we live in. I hope you can help me on my journey!
