Transit Engineer-In-Training

Current

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Sep 2023 - Present

Student Transportation Planner, Transit Network Management

TransLink is Metro Vancouver's multimodal transportation authority, and is responsible for an extensive public transit network that hundreds of thousands of people rely on every day. In Transit Network Management, I was part of the team that continually reviews the performance of this network to ensure service is provided where it's needed most.My responsibilities included chairing regular meetings, preparing presentations and communications materials, responding to customer and stakeholder feedback, and conducting technical and spatial analysis of individual transit routes. I developed a service plan for a new RapidBus route and provided visualization of key bus ridership trends to inform higher-level decision-making. Throughout this work, I applied best practices of transit planning and incorporated important equity considerations to ensure that TransLink's constrained resources were put to the best use possible.

Jan 2023 - May 2023

Civil Engineering Co-Op Student

Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada

As part of ISL's municipal design team, I worked on several transportation design projects including a traffic calming project in the City of Burnaby. I applied my previous experience and investigated best practices in transportation design to develop a design that will improve safety, transit accessibility, and the active transportation user experience within the project area. Balancing competing priorities was challenging, but over my term at ISL, I learned how to remain focused on the big picture and how to translate that into the detailed design for civil infrastructure.Throughout the process, I became proficient in Civil 3D and regularly applied engineering standards such as MMCD specifications, the TAC Geometric Design Guide, and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada.

May 2022 - Aug 2022

Transportation Analyst

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

At Bunt & Associates, I completed several transportation impact assessments for high-profile transit-oriented developments, parking and loading studies, swept path analysis, transportation demand management, construction traffic management plans, and long-range master planning.I planned and conducted transportation data collection activities including parking, loading, and traffic counts, in addition to qualitative observations. I gained experience with transportation engineering software including Synchro, SimTraffic, Sidra, AutoCAD, AutoTURN, Python, Excel, VBA, and GIS.I collaborated with clients and municipalities throughout the process, developing my understanding of the land development process as well as opportunities to promote sustainable transportation options.

Sep 2020 - Aug 2021

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Proactive road maintenance can reduce the long-term costs of highway infrastructure, but what about the environmental impacts? As a research assistant for Dr. Omar Swei, I developed a reinforcement learning algorithm that optimizes the environmental performance of a series of pavement management decisions over time. For this project, I synthesized existing research from over 40 relevant articles and independently explored the economic aspect of the optimization tool. My work has supported future research in this field and intends to help transportation agencies meet ambitious greenhouse gas reductions targets under fixed budgets. Our peer-reviewed article is published in Resources, Conservation, and Recycling. I presented this work as lead author at the 2021 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting.
