My name is Ben Harrell, and I'm a health economist studying health disparities, health insurance, and mental healthcare markets. My most recent work explores how LGBTQ+ people navigate health and healthcare in the U.S., and how public policy shapes that navigation. To study these phenomena, I use a variety of methods: field experiments, quasi-experimental analyses using large public surveys, analyses of linked administrative data, and most recently, community based research designs.I received my PhD in Economics in 2021 from Georgia State University, where I wrote my dissertation on the economics of sexual and mental health. Then, from 2021-2023, I was a postdoctoral scholar at the LGBTQ+ Policy Lab at Vanderbilt University. Following my postdoc, I took a position as an assistant professor of economics at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where I currently serve.I hold professional memberships with the American Economic Association, the American Society of Health Economists, the Association for Public Policy and Management, and the Society for Government Economists.
