Honours Project - Shell Eco-Marathon Vehicle & 3D Printed Engine

The University Of Canterbury

Canterbury & West Coast, New Zealand

- Development of the world’s first 3D printed internal combustion engine. - Development of a novel infinitely variable transmission. - Awards from the University of Canterbury, Engineering New Zealand, and the Shell Eco-Marathon Singapore. My honours project was an ambitious undertaking that intended to develop a high-efficiency drive train for the university’s entrance to the Shell Eco-Marathon Singapore. My involvement was both as the technical director, managing a team of six engineers and of the lead designer for the internal combustion engine. With a team selected randomly from three engineering disciplines and a year to build an engine, transmission, and associated systems my people and project management skills were put on a steep learning curve. On top of designing a high-efficiency engine, an internal motivation to find the best solution to a problem led me to develop a novel Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT). Eliminating the need for a clutch and enabling the engine to always run optimally, the transmission reduced weight and energy losses. The project ended up winning the Technical Innovation award at the Shell Eco-Marathon and multiple awards from Engineering New Zealand and the University of Canterbury. It is now a regular feature of open days and trade displays for the university.
