About Daniel De Gouw

I am the Lead Avionics Engineer for Kea Aerospace, a company that is designing a solar-powered stratospheric-capable UAV's. I also design, test and integrate the Avionics required to operate such a vehicle. Some key areas of my involvement for the Kea Atmos MK1 UAV were the battery packs, solar panels, power distribution, and the system architecture which was built from the ground up.Through my time at Kea Aerospace I have significantly developed my skills in team leadership, solar panel design, battery pack design and manufacturing, system architecture design, PCB design, integration testing and PCB testing/debugging.I have a Masters in Electrical Engineering and an Bachelors (with Honours) in Mechatronics Engineering. My passion lies in innovative R&D projects that involve designing, testing and integrating electronic components and systems. I am a very hands on and motivated person who enjoys challenges and innovation. I strive to learn or improve my skillset to become a better engineer.

The scholarship was focused on the research into Electric Vehicle (EV) charging and the protection devices required. The main circuit of interest was the PFC inside the EV charger where it could potentially fault becoming a hazard to people. RCD's were tested as the protection devices due to similar household devices requiring these. Overall I spent 468 hours on this internship.The scholarship involved different PFC circuits to be modified and additional circuits to be created. One additional circuit was used to fool the EV charger into thinking an EV was attached and another circuit was used to create the fault on the different PFC circuits. Comprehensive tests were performed with the data being fully documented. A full report with a summary report was required on completion of this internship, where it was then passed onto the appropriate people to review the current NZ regulations for EV charging.I gained a lot of experience with power electronics, modifying, creating and testing circuits. I used various testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, a Hioki PQA, a PQ-Box 200 and a Newtons4th PQA. Multiple AC power supplies were used to generate clean sine waves. As a side project, I was required to measure the harmonics produced by several devices and compare the results from multiple different sources. This was done to show the average harmonics that would be seen on the supply from these devices.
