ONC (oceannetworks.ca) is a research infrastructure (RI) that operates sensor networks to observe the ocean. They include the NEPTUNE and VENUS observatories, as well as a number of coastal observatories and other mobile systems, which together form the world’s most important real-time ocean observing system. ONC is one of the major “big science” facilities in Canada. Our funding comes mostly from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and from the Canadian Federal Government. My specific responsibilities within Ocean Networks Canada encompass the organization’s impact on science and society. To that effect I oversee the delivery of our science support and of our applied science solutions. This includes ensuring a continuous improvement of our metrics, including knowledge transfer (publications) and training of highly qualified personnel, among others. Our Science Services team is composed of scientists who engage their respective community to maximize the use of our infrastructure. The Applied Science Solutions team seeks opportunities to deliver benefits to society and industry. Examples include tsunami impact modelling, earthquake early warning, etc.I have led for 15 years the development of Oceans 3.0, ONC's data management system. Oceans 3.0 takes care of data acquisition, processing, quality control, preview, conversion to advanced data products and distribution. It also helps monitor and control our many sensor networks. Data management is so important at ONC that the staff devoted to it represents over 40% of the total. Moreover, to further emphasize the importance of Data Management at ONC, I also led initiatives to create and host the World Data System international technology office at ONC, as well as the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System regional association for the Pacific. As a member of the Executive team of this $650M facility, I contribute to funding search, strategy and future directions of the facility, including its new initiatives such as SolidCarbon, a Negative Emission Technology. My role also included turning ONC into a project- and service-oriented, agile enterprise, resting on clear processes to manage our projects from opportunity to final delivery. I am active in Research Data initiatives in Canada.I also was for a while the Interim Editor in Chief of the American Geophysical Union “Earth and Space Science” open journal and was an Editor of the same journal for 5 years. I serve on the Board of the BC Chapter of the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS).
