About Beth Keats

Committed social entrepreneur dedicated to the protection of indigenous rights and the subsistence economy. Beth provides research, analysis, and advice to inform land and resource management decisions and strategic planning. She does this through qualitative research and analytical methods, and mixed quantitative-qualitative data tools, public participation processes and planning, and communications. Beth is an experienced and skilled project manager, with many years of experience producing land and marine use and occupancy research, traditional ecological knowledge studies, and local histories for use in negotiations and decision-making processes on environmental management and impact assessment, marine and land use planning processes, consultation, land claims, and litigation. Through her role as a founding partner and research associate at Trailmark Systems’ Victoria office, Beth has been in the vanguard of the development of regional monitoring systems, developing methodologies and customizable digital solutions for managing land use and heritage resources, and implementing field-tested community-based wildlife/environmental monitoring programs. Beth has been pivotal in developing management end-uses for community-based research programs, tying data to specific applications in referrals and consultation tracking, for eg.She has project managed large research programs for indigenous community clients that have successfully moved communities out of shallow consultation and into the deepest level on some of the largest environmental assessments of the decade. Beth is driven by an interest in participatory research, subsistence economies, and the power of digital communications and digital humanities in promoting self-determination and local management. Beth thrives on challenging the status quo of resource use research and management.
