I am a human geographer / anthropologist, and have worked on topics of interest to Indigenous communities since the late 1990s, beginning in Northern Labrador and then slowly, over the course of the next 25 years, working my way westward. Much of my work has occurred at the intersection of the resource sector and Indigenous communities’ subsistence economies, or at the crossroads of the past as it really was and the present that we imagine. I look at these relationships through qualitative and mixed-method tools, including historical and geographical analysis, land use and local knowledge studies, resource use and wildlife harvest analysis, and environmental impact assessment. From the vantage points these approaches create, I offer aboriginal organizations and communities various kinds of support and knowledge, including technical reviews of development applications, guidance through regulatory processes, assessment of impacts on the exercise of aboriginal and treaty rights, consultation and engagement, and communications support. I work actively in Northeast and coastal BC, in the oil sands, and across the Arctic in the Inuvialuit, Nunavut, and Nunatsiavut areas. I hold both M.Phil and Ph.D degrees from the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, UK. I did undergraduate degrees at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. My doctoral thesis deals with Inuit customary law and governance, historical adaptation and resistance, and the social upheaval resulting from forced relocation. I lecture frequently at academic and policy conferences on Aboriginal history, traditional knowledge, consultation, and extractive industries. Before I was a social scientist, I was a northern-based journalist, editing the Inuktitut-English magazine Kinatuinamut Ilingajuk for several years in the late 1990s; later, I edited and wrote for a popular hunting, fishing, and outdoor conservation magazine on the East Coast. In 2012, I founded EverNorth Consulting. In 2013, unhappy with the received approaches to gathering information on aboriginal land use and knowledge, I co-founded Trailmark Systems to develop innovative crowd-sourcing approaches to these questions.
