About Beth Miller
Analysis. Data. Research. Policy. Planning... For most, these words don't conjure up thrilling or aspirational thoughts, but when you begin to dig, they tell a story, and can even provide a roadmap to where you want to go. What story do you want to tell? What path are you trying to undercover? I help organizations synthesize information. With that information, you can uncover your story, find out how to get where you want to go or determine whether what you think is working is actually working. Early on in my career, before remote learning was mundane, I was working in Distance Education at a university. If you were in an online course and wanted to take an exam off of the main campus, you told us where to mail the exam and we'd send it there. But that meant finding addresses and sending envelopes far and wide. It was a logistical nightmare, a drain on resources and so I took on the task of optimizing the number and locations of exam invigilation sites within the province so that no one student was more than an hour trip from any exam site. After my review, the following semester there were half as many exam sites, with a streamlined process in place. Here is an old familiar story- mountains of data, that no one seems to have access to. After moving to Calgary, I was working on a project involving municipal arts funding. It's hard to convince politicians of a funding increase when you don't have the evidence to prove your need. After months of data digging, spreadsheets and conversations, I determined that Calgary was the lowest in municipal arts funding among its Canadian peers. This evidence was reviewed by the Mayor and presented to councilors as they prepared to vote on the next budget cycle. After eight years of a freeze on municipal arts funding, City Council voted to double arts spending. Maybe there is a change or information gap you need help tackling, a strategy that needs to be created or implemented, a refresh of sorts! Reach out and let's chat! If you are not satisfied with leaving things status quo, I would love to team up to help you reach the outcomes your organization needs to be more effective. I'm always looking to grow my network, so go ahead and connect with me.
