Assistant Features Editor

Griesheim, Germany

Stars & Stripes Newspaper serves the entire European Command’s military and family population with a combined print and on-line readership in excess of one million people. As the Assistant Features Editor I was responsible for sorting the Associated Press wire stories for the Features Department. I was responsible for editing and proofreading copy from both the Features Section and the newsroom. I did all the layout work for my portion of the Features section. I assembled the schedule for the TV guide and calendar section of the newspaper. I worked closely with the staff reporters on the newsroom floor and stringer and freelance writers to ensure strict deadlines were met. I never missed a suspense or printing deadline. I would interview and photograph military and family members about various topics on bases in the surrounding area and write Man on the Street feature pieces. When required I would assist with investigations into story leads and backgrounds.

Assistant Features Editor

Florida Living Magazine

Gainesville, Fl

In my senior year at university I secured a required internship through the College of Journalism at Florida Living Magazine (now called Florida Monthly Magazine). I was so successful they converted my position to the first-ever paid internship at the magazine and asked me to stay. I was responsible for researching and writing descriptions of events throughout the state. I would interview event coordinators and write descriptions of noteworthy events for inclusion in the magazine. I regularly worked with event organizers and city planning offices responsible for the various events to ensure I captured the nuances and all necessary details. I then edited the magazine to include all of the events for publication. I met all deadlines set by my editor and had a 100% accuracy rate over the 9 months of my employment.
