About Bethany Ross
I have previously worked as a scientist at LumiraDx as part of the Reagents team, where I developed new medical tests which used their new, portable point of care diagnostic system. I successfully defended my PhD (University of Strathclyde) in December 2020, my research involved using resonance Raman and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with SERS substrates and nanoparticles for the detection of the explosive Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN). I also completed an integrated masters course in Chemistry (MChem) at University of Strathclyde, with a year in industry. My masters dissertation focused on the detection of hospital acquired infectious diseases using silver nanoparticles, SERS and DNA.

Scientist 1 (Reagents)
After my promotion, I continued my work on the D-dimer team, supporting the transfer of the technical processes to manufacturing, therefore gaining experience working in a GMP environment. Once the processes had been transferred and needed little R&D support, I joined other teams , such as the troponin, RSV and CRP projects. As a scientist 1 I focused on the preparation and development of antibody coated microparticles, improving the efficiency of assays and optimising reagent stability. I also devised new experiments, as well as improved upon existing ones for the characterisation of the microparticles. I wrote new work instructions and protocols for experiments, as well as improved upon existing ones, and I created and led training sessions for new methodologies for technicians and other colleagues. I was also involved in upskilling colleagues via in-house training for certain instruments and characterisation processes. I gained a lot of experience presenting data to colleagues in different departments throughout the company. On top of my scientist 1 duties, I also managed a team of technicians which organised pipette clinics for the quarterly calibration and annual maintenance for the entire population of pipettes on the Stirling work site (~500 pipettes). It was my responsibility to liaise with the external company to organise suitable dates for the clinics, and to make sure the clinics were running smoothly.
R&D Laboratory Technician (Reagents)
Joined the research and development department as part of the Reagents team, where I primarily worked on the COVID-19 team for the first 6 months, before joining the D-Dimer team. In this company I worked in a laboratory operating within GLP guidelines, using a quality management system (ISO 13485:2016) and within health and safety guidelines including COSHH assessments. This role included the verification, calibration, maintenance and operation of instrumentation used for the characterisation of microparticles and fluorescent conjugated antibodies. These instruments included flow cytometry, fluorescence plate readers, magnetometers, handheld density meters, HPLC, DLS and NTA. Day to day work was also spent characterising the particles performance, and in the preparation of buffer solutions used throughout LumiraDx.
Phd Student
Laboratory Technician
Working as an industrial placement student within the Organic Environmental Analysis Laboratory in a team of 20 analysts. Main responsibilities included interpretation of large volumes of spectra in order to meet company deadlines, analysis of samples using GC-FID, GC-MS, GCxGC and colourimetric techniques in order to identify potentially hazardous compounds such as PAHs, SVOCs, PCBs, petroleum compounds, pesticides and metal compounds. Preparation of samples for analysis and reporting of data were also part of my day to day duties. This role provided me with extensive experience including instrument maintenance, optimisation of instrument conditions as well as interpretation of spectra and working towards very tight deadlines. It also gave me experience working with PerkinElmer computer programms. Throughout the placement I worked as part of a team and independently for a number of months to prepare and analyse samples efficiently, submitting them in a time efficient manner.
Bar Staff/ Waitress
Achieved level 2 food and hygiene, level 2 health and safety and bar license (Mitchell and Butler). Interacted with customers and worked as part of a team daily, correctly remembering orders and handling money.
