About Bhavani Nyanajegaran
There is saying that if you can't work in a job you love, then you have to love the job you get. I am blessed with a job that I love- public communications. I love coming up with creative plans and strategies to communicate policies to satisfy the demands of a higher educated and mobile populace. Being in the media/public relations in the government sector for 10 years, I am well-acquainted and highly experienced in a full spectrum of communications skills such as public and media relations, events management, crisis communications, corporate branding and identity, internal communications as well as media strategy. My stints in various public sector agencies such as Defence, Foreign Affairs, Communication & Information, as well as Finance ministries have nurtured a solid understanding in public policy design and its considerations, and equipped me with the essential skills to dissect policies when communicating them to others. With a strong background in understanding new media, I am also well-acquainted with social media engagement and policy.

Head, Policy Communications And Research
CurrentI conceptualise, design and drive all public comms efforts to seniors living in Singapore for the Silver Generation Office (SGO). This portfolio involves conducting client research to understand senior profiles, dissect their ageing needs and areas of interests as well as developing customised communications to help our seniors age independently and gracefully in Singapore. Working closely with the Ministry of Health and the Agency for Integrated Care, I develop communications messages and materials for volunteers who conduct personalised outreach with our seniors. Tasked with enhancing the public image of SGO, I have also developed public comms strategies aimed at increasing brand recognition as well as building conversations on social media spaces to attract volunteers to SGO. Under my supervision, SGO doubled its social media followership as well as improved its public recognition. To further specialise senior engagement in Singapore, I have developed senior archetypes with tailored messaging premised on social, health and financial situations so that more seniors see the value add in SGO's ground engagements. This is the first time in SGO history that a detailed archetypal model has been developed to zero in on suitable interventions and tighten linkages between service providers. It will be rolled out in 2021. I am looking to thus explore other opportunities to learn and challenge myself more after my posting in SGO ends in Mar 2021.
Deputy Director Online Strategic And Corporate Communications
Assistant Director, Information Policy And Strategy
I headed a team of three members to conceptualise and plan the public communications strategy for the Home Affairs Ministry, focusing on national security campaigns such as SG Secure, as well as designing and executing public comms for highly sensitive internal security matters. During my time in MHA, I discovered a new interest in video direction and editing, resulting in MHA's first Facebook video series, produced internally under my direction, to emphasise the importance of staying vigilant and rallying the community in fighting terrorism. I was awarded by the Ministry of Communications and Information for daring to dream out of the box by tapping on social media and comedic videos to educate and rally the community against terrorism.Being part of the whole-of-Government team that was tasked with implementing publicity comms for anti-terrorism in Singapore, I also developed the first masterplan to outline and coordinate WOG comms efforts. I worked closely with schools, public service agencies, as well as telcos to develop emergency plans and SOPs to safeguard Singapore in the event of terrorist attacks. My time in MHA has truly taught me the importance of a united and resilient community to fight terrorism, and more importantly, the larger external networks that need to be coordinated in order to effect a more robust response to terrorist acts against Singapore.
Senior Corporate Communications Associate
• Planned and managed publicity, produced media collaterals, organised media briefings and conducted press conferences for MOF events and announcements, particularly for those related to tax policy and evasion matters• Monitored local and foreign news reports to gauge international perception of Singapore Exchange of Information (Tax) policy and devised ways of spreading international awareness of Singapore's tax regime
Public Affairs Officer
My job involved handling media relations, responding to crisis communications (both at the Ministry and Whole-of-Government) levels and strengthening the freshly set up New Media unit in the Ministry. This involved drawing up the new media policy and framework for the Ministry and looking at how we could generate content and increase public engagement on our social media sites. I have also introduced a Young Diplomat Programme aimed at engaging tertiary-level students to foreign policy matters. This programme is currently in the works. I also produced a quarterly newsletter for foreign affairs officials that participate in a local training programme. Other job duties include media planning and publicity for events, public communications, preparing and handling media briefings, production of press materials, media monitoring etc.
Assistant Manager For Media Relations
I joined MICA as an Information Officer in September 2010. My first inter-ministry posting is to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During my six-month stint in MICA, I was involved in media monitoring and preparing media plans and publicity assessments for MICA-related events. I also handled online monitoring and creating opportunities for media cultivation and sharing.
Senior Media Relations Officer
I started off as a Media Relations Officer in 2006 and was promoted to Senior Media Relations Officer in 2009. Apart from handling media relations with both local and international defence journalists, I was involved in drafting submissions and media plans for event publicity. Events included both local defence launches as well as international exhibitions, such as the Singapore Airshow. I was also involved in staffing the Defence Minister as the press secretary during his overseas defence visits. As a media relations officer, I was in charge of drafting press materials, such as statements and factsheets, as well as take photographs during events and diplomatic calls. I also contributed articles to in-house defence magazines. Organizing media lunches and putting together media cultivation plans was also part of the job. I was also an important member of the Crisis Response Team in the Ministry of Defence and I managed the Crisis Communications segment. Significant crises that I have managed public communications for include the F5 crash in Taiwan, the Sumatran earthquake in September 2010 and several other training-related incidents/deaths.
Senior Editorial Assistant
As a holiday job, my tasks involved editing articles that were sent in by freelance writers for the lifestyle magazine, which catered to mainly teenagers. I was also in charge of organising a talent-hunt, which resulted in a full-fledged modelling competition that received tremendous response locally.
