Brigadier General (Ret) Bob Summers is known for his positive team-building leadership style and mission-focused approach to success. During his 28-year Air Force career Bob led organizations through major mission changes including 1) reversing an unacceptable performance decline of a key unit to award-winning and industry-setting standards, and 2) playing a key leadership role for a Department of Energy (DOE) cultural change designed to improve the mission performance of laboratories and sitesRealizing that each of these situations required organizational culture changes, Bob's teams addressed the cultural components of process, behavior, and values; aligning new missions with current missions.Bob's career is hallmarked by:Delivering clear goals and communicationSetting and enforcing high standardsWillingness to make tough decisions, especially regarding peopleFocus on developing, training, and integrating common processes throughout the organizationPersonal involvement and commitment to mission successEmpowering and supporting people to make and execute courageous decisionsAfter completing his Air Force career, Bob was a senior-contractor team-member managing and operating various DOE laboratories and sites. The contractor-federal team developed a project plan that included the vision, the teams, the resources, and the timelines to achieve the desired change. All this was accomplished successfully and is now accepted as the prototype for the Headquarter's actions.Today, Bob continues to mentor and coach leaders, helping them to successfully improve their cultures and organizations.
