Student Researcher

Los Angeles, California, United States

As part of a four-student team, we designed and implemented a Bradbury-Nielsen Gate (BNG) for the characterization of an electrospray thruster. We employed Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (TOF-MS) to measure ion plume and calculate thrust, offering a cost-effective alternative to expensive traditional thrust stands used for low-thrust applications like electrospray thrusters. Addressing the high costs and complexity of existing BNG designs, which require pricey materials and precise micro-machining, we developed an innovative design to construct the BNG including a novel method for lacing the interdigitated gate wires to ensure uniform tension and prevent plastic deformation. I personally wrote all LabView code and developed comprehensive laboratory testing procedures incorporating various experimental instruments. Our project garnered recognition for its innovation, securing 2nd place at the AIAA Regional Conference in March 2020.
