Under a Mitacs Accelerate Internship with an industry partner, I led a pilot project investigating and devloping a genetic approach to address the emerging wild boar crisis in Canada and the United States utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 technology.Purified two different human proteins (CREB3 and CREB3 Recruitment Factor) and identified various 20 amino acid peptides that bound to CREB3. I then developed a functional validation assay in a mammalian cell model to assess the effects of the identified peptides on CREB3 function.

Performed a literature review project on differentiating luminal A and luminal B breast cancer sub-types and presented this in a department meeting. This research was presented at the 2015 St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference and the abstract won 1st place. My suggested gene expression cut-off percentage was then recommended as the international standard.Assisted in converting the lab to Good Lab Practices (GLP) by cataloguing/sorting biological samples, quantifying stored DNA/RNA samples, and creating a DNA data bank. Optimized DNA extraction method and presented the findings in department meetings which resulted in a change of the DNA isolation kits used in the lab.
