Bret began his career in North St. Paul Minnesota. He was recruited by St. Cloud State University to play college hockey where he was an All Academic Student Athlete. Bret left St. Cloud State in 1991 to join the United States Olympic Team where he played in the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympic Games. After the Olympics he joined the team that drafted him.
