About Brian King
As a Literary Development Editor (see briankingeditorial.com), my approach is quite different from other editors or well-known writers at workshops and conferences. Rather than giving an "editing report" or several brief comments, I suggest changes, review the author's revisions, and answer emailed concerns until the work is finished. I ask questions to prompt each writer to flesh out a fully realized piece. Each story or non-fiction article is a different process of discovery. I have over twenty years of experience both editing fiction (Senior Editor, Alchemy Books, San Francisco) and writing fiction and non-fiction (see below for credits). Perhaps most importantly, I take time to get to know each writer, his or her goals and style. I go into more depth than just textbook bullet points. In fiction, the sequence of events should be guided by some revealing of the main character's emotional core. I suggest writing in a notebook all aspects of a character's makeup, so that the writer knows more than is used. The tone of the story, the feel of the environment, the manner of speech, the outcome--all stem from the emotional core. It may even change the plot that the writer first had in mind. In non-fiction, I follow the same contact with the author, while focusing on different elements such as making the theme compelling, and the writing clear and accurate. Currently I am working with a writer in Kunming, China through emails and video conferencing. She has chosen to write a short story in English, translated from Mandarin Chinese.
