“Protecting people and business” is my mission. That was not the case prior to my safety and risk career.Safety was not important or a priority to me as a retail store manager. I had more important things to focus on, like making sales plan, staying in stock, and ensuring my employees provided the best customer service. I remember witnessing employees constantly violating safety procedures and I never addressed it. That all changed when I learned an 8 year old girl was involved in a fatal accident involving one of forklifts retrieving product. Learning about this young girl who came into the store to shop with her mother, and then leaving in an ambulance and later passing away, shook me to my core. That’s when I realized that we work in a dangerous environment that I took for granted. Honestly, it’s sad it took something like that to happen to really open my eyes to safety. After that accident, I became serious about safety and made it a priority. In fact, a year after the accident, I changed careers and joined the corporate safety team as a District Safety Manager. I made it my mission to protect employees and visitors from injury.
