I am an experienced attorney focused on working with clients to develop intellectual property strategies that provide value and that are aligned with business goals. From small startups to Fortune 500 companies I work closely with clients to ensure I am providing sound counsel not only as to whether something can be legally protected, but ensuring that the protection fits with the business interests. I value candid advice, even if it is not necessarily what the client wants to hear as well as being responsive to client inquiries and needs.Over the past 20 years I have developed experience in building portfolios and managing patent strategies from a global perspective as well as the individual prosecution of patent applications in a number of technology areas including: -cloud computing including distributed systems and virtual machines;-semiconductor fabrication processes and equipment;-machine learning including language models for dialog generation and machine translation as well as applications of convolutional neural networks and transformers in various fields including computer vision and autonomous vehicles;-social media innovations including authentication, privacy, and revenue generation;-wireless technology including near field communications;-visual effects including motion capture, materials scanning, and surface texturing for use in motion picture special effects, architectural renderings, and other media;-robotics control systems;-medical devices including surgical procedures and spinal treatments as well as related freedom to operate evaluations;-optics including multiplexers, MEMS, and dispersion compensation;-home automation and Internet of Things.Prior to joining Fish & Richardson, I worked as a Research Assistant for Professor Lawrence Lessig, then at Stanford Law School, assisting with his book "The Future of Ideas: The Fate of the Commons in a Connected World" (2001).During my undergraduate years at Linfield University, I performed research focusing on surface physics (particularly in the area of field emission) as well as research in sonoluminescence–the phenomenon of light emission from bubbles through application of sound. I also performed nuclear magnetic resonance research for the Michigan State University Physics and Chemistry Departments (1998), which formed the basis of my senior honors thesis entitled “Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Determination of Protein Orientation.” I have given talks at conferences and in-house seminars on intellectual property protection and patent strategies in the Post-Alice world.
