Brian Hernandez Email and Phone Number
Hello! I'm Brian Hernandez, a GEM Associate Fellow and a Master’s student in Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, specializing in Advanced Infrastructure Systems and Materials, Mechanics, and Computing. With a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied aspects of engineering, I am passionate about pushing the boundaries of traditional construction towards innovative, sustainable solutions—especially in extraterrestrial environments. My journey in engineering started at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, complemented by a minor in Mathematics. During my undergraduate studies, I was recognized for my academic excellence through multiple scholarships and awards, receiving the "Hats off" Academic Award.Currently, I am involved in groundbreaking work as a NASA OSTEM Engineering Intern within the Intelligent Systems and Earth Science Division at NASA Ames. Here, I am engaged in the VIPER project, focusing on lunar exploration to discover in-situ resources. My role involves analyzing drilling performance in lunar simulants, utilizing Python to create detailed graphical representations, and addressing deployment challenges for future lunar habitation efforts.Previously, I've interned with several leading engineering firms, contributing to significant projects such as the CoStar skyscraper, Trilith LIVE theater, and Atrium Health hospital tower. These experiences have honed my skills in structural analysis, 3D modeling, and the coordination of complex construction projects.Beyond engineering, I am deeply committed to leadership and community engagement, demonstrated through my role as Head of External Relations for the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and as a Teaching Assistant for GIS at Carnegie Mellon. My technical skills are complemented by a proficiency in a variety of industry-relevant software and a passion for continuous learning in areas like smart cities, IoT integration, and digital twins. In my free time, I express my creative side through oil and acrylic painting, and I am an avid soccer fanatic. I am also bilingual, fluent in both English and Spanish, which enhances my ability to communicate and collaborate in diverse environments.I am always eager to connect with fellow professionals who are passionate about innovative engineering solutions and sustainable development.

Nasa Ostem Engineering Intern, Viper Project, Intelligent Systems And Earth Science DivisionNasa Ames Research Center Jan 2024 - PresentSilicon Valley, Ca•Engaged in the VIPER project, focusing on the exploration of the Moon’s extreme environments to discover ice and other in-situ resources. • Working with the VIPER and AMRDS drill bit systems, conducting data analysis on drilling performance in lunar simulants• Utilized Python for generating detailed graphical representations and various data files to advance understanding of lunar drilling mechanics.• Address and solve deployment challenges related to the integration and construction of extraterrestrial structures, facilitating future lunar exploration and habitation efforts.• Addressed and resolved deployment challenges associated with the integration and construction of extraterrestrial structures, contributing to the advancement of future lunar exploration and habitation initiatives.• Assisted in determining the mechanical properties of lunar simulants derived from a PhD dissertation, as well as those of terrestrial rocks. Conducted analyses to identify the specific percussive energy of the TRIDENT drill on lunar simulants and developed a graph illustrating the correlation between Specific Percussive Energy and the Unconfined Compressive Strength of the simulants.• Took the initiative to learn about active projects in Dr. Lynn Rothschild’s lab, where I connected with researchers and gained insight into the potential of mycotecture as a foundational material for lunar construction. During my visit, I observed the integration of fungal materials with substrates and lunar/Martian simulants and engaged in discussions about their applications for extraterrestrial habitats.• Gained insights into the ARMADAS project and facilitated connections with a research group at Stanford to explore potential collaboration opportunities. -
