I accepted an Army college scholarship driven by a desire for public service, a thirst for adventure, the need for challenges, and a practical goal to avoid student loans. I had only planned to serve for a brief stint. Instead, I found a rewarding and successful career as an intelligence officer tackling wicked problems and leading high-performing teams within elite military units. Throughout my military service, I was known for simplifying complexity so that organizations could thrive and accomplish great things. I did this by:• Bringing a steady and calming presence in volatile, uncertain, chaotic, and ambiguous environments.• Building effective teams based on character, candor, commitment, and competence.• Using and advocating rational data-driven decision-making.• Setting a clear strategy, objectives, and key results then empowering agile cross-functional teams to execute.• Having the grit, stamina, and drive needed to get the job done, inspiring others to do the same.I’m now taking off the uniform for many of the same motivations I joined: the pursuit of new challenges and adventures, and the quest for new ways to serve. Along the way, I’ve filled many notebooks with valuable lessons:• Effective leadership is context-specific tailored to the team’s needs, problem, and environment.• Effective leaders control the controllables and manage what they can’t.• Defer high-consequence non-reversible decisions till the last responsible moment; quickly make low- consequence reversible decisions to learn and adapt• You can’t know where you are going till you know where you are• Misaligned objectives, incentives, and performance metrics are the quickest path to failureI’ll be available for new opportunities in Summer 2025 and look forward to roles where I can leverage my leadership, management, strategic planning, and communication skills in high-performing technical organizations.
