After years in the shrinking field of American steel manufacturing, I decided in 2016 to brush off the old Ph.D. and refresh my previous training as a data scientist.For the convenience of the reader, I've pruned my work experience record of jobs least relevant to data science. If anyone really cares about my time in process research, project management, or managing USWA steelworkers, send me a note and I can tell you more.- At JHBP, I managed the installation and programming of new machinery and the Allen Bradley controls necessary to run them. Created annual cost savings over $400,000 per line.- At Tenaris, I led capital upgrade projects, including a complete QC lab, a compressed air system, CNC machine tools, and optical and electron microscopes.- At US Steel, I was Area Manager for Maintenance, managing 15 supervisors and 85 hourly employees to maintain electric overhead cranes, rail car shop, "riggers," and vibration monitoring program.

- Managed 80 employees in daily operations and maintenance.- Led an overhaul of the mill rolling process automation, including programming of mill-wide controls using C++. - Used Excel macros, Visual Basic, and SQL to standardize and improve regular tasks for mill operations, accounting, and maintenance.

- Led process improvement projects including rebar bundle roping project worth $2,000,000 per plant.- Developed algorithms in Allen Bradley PLC5 for optimizing the timing of high-speed equipment.

- Led the Width Improvement Team. Developed regression model to predict spread-squeeze behavior of steel. Rewrote mill control systems code in pascal to optimize mill scrap reduction. Reduced delays and scrap to save $4,000,000 per year.- Created mill monitoring software suite with Visual Basic and SQL allowing instant response to delays and quality problems. Reduced key delays by 80%, with over $250,000 in annual savings.- Managed 26 employees operating cold rolling mill and roll shop.

- Eliminated a flatness problem causing $800,000 per year in reprocessing costs. Optimized the control algorithm for a rolling mill, programmed in ARC86 (assembly language). Tuned the system to reduce head and tail scrap, saving an additional $200,000 per year, and received General Manager’s Award for this project.- Introduced advances in vibration monitoring which led to key maintenance improvements at the IH tin mill. Project published in Iron & Steel Engineer, September 1999.
