As team lead for UNIX and Storage, I was responsible for the servers which powered IGN's sites. Key accomplishments include:- Integration of new sites and technologies -- IGN bought GameSpy in March 2004, Rotten Tomatoes in June 2004; Askmen in June 2005, and a few smaller properties. We had to migrate these sites into IGN's datacenter and integrate them into our infrastructure- Migration from a Solaris based infrastructure to RedHat Linux- Adoption of dynamically provisioned CDN service for meeting peak traffic- Deployment of new platform for hosting external sites

Fox Interactive Media (FIM) ran a number of entertainment-focused web sites. My team supported IGN.com, FilePlanet.com, RottenTomatoes, AskMen.com, FoxSports.com, AmericanIdol.com, and others.In Fall 2005, Newscorp bought IGN and rolled it into FIM. Our operations team was centralized and put in charge of supporting the Internet-facing infrastructure for all FIM properties except for MySpace and Photobucket. My responsibilities grew to managing 4 teams distributed across 3 offices: the Linux team, the storage team, the DBA team, and the Systems Engineering team.Being a rollup, FIM resembled a startup in that there was no infrastructure in place for managing the larger organization. My teams had to adapt existing tools and processes or develop and deploy new ones for almost all of our operational needs.The sites my teams supported were nearly all Internet-facing web sites, using a variety of technology, including PHP, Java, Ruby, and .NET; Oracle, MS SQL, and MySQL; and various supporting technologies such as memcache, Akamai CDN, Netscaler load balancers, XML processors, SVN, etc.My accomplishments while with FIM include: - Merging the storage and Linux operations teams and technology from multiple properties to work as a cohesive (but distributed) unit - Deploying automation to improve workflow and supportability; managing and participating in projects for systems deployment, systems management, account management, inventory, monitoring, etc. - Leading the implementation of change management and incident reporting policy and processes - Internal customer support (architecture, scale-out, deployment, etc.) for many successful product launches - Creation of the operational engineering team in support of infrastructure and systems engineering projects - Centralized management and monitoring of our NetApp-based storage infrastructure, with 30+ devices in 6 locationsIn July of 2009, IGN was split off and made independent again.

Technical Lead for the CalMail projectAs a member of the Central Computing Services group at UC Berkeley, I served as the Technical Lead on the year-long project to replace the university's legacy email systems with a unified ground-up replacement. This project required the coordination and support of a number of different groups, and had to meet the diverse needs of the UC Berkeley community. In addition, I helped to support and expand a diverse set of centralized services including email, web, streamed lectures, backups, directory and authentication services, and computational resources for academic research.

Generic Media's software dynamically converted media streams to all major formats. My time at Generic Media was split between operational support of the ASP service and software development for the licensed product. R&D projects included developing SNMP monitoring agents and interfaces, and fully automated database-driven deployment and configuration management of Linux and Windows 2000 servers.

The Western Disaster Center is an innovative, nonprofit research center using technology to save lives and reduce the economic loss from natural, environmental, technological and man-made disasters. I established the WDC information network from the ground up, and worked with partner organizations to provide technical resource and assistance.

During my time with Snowball.com, the data center grew from two dozen servers to nearly 200 (half Solaris and half Windows 2000), supporting a technologically diverse set of web sites. As Internet Data Center manager, I was responsible for all aspects of Snowball.com's Internet presence, from the network infrastructure to the server software. My role included full-time hands-on administration in addition to my duties as manager of the data center team.My team focused heavily on performance analysis and tuning, service redundancy, and streamlined provisioning of new servers and services.Snowball.com has since renamed itself to IGN Entertainment, Inc.
