He is an Associate Editor of International Scientific Journal Small Ruminant Research and has been a member of the Editorial Advisory Board since 1992.From 2010 to 2014 Program Leader for Next-to-skin Comfort properties of wool knitwear, in the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Sheep Industry Innovation. This work developed objective methods for determining comfort properties of knitwear and identified determinants of comfort properties to assist manufacturers and retailers. Dr McGregor’s other research is focussed on fundamental properties of animal fibres, fibre softness, and the relationship between skin follicles and fibre quality. Dr McGregor has worked with scientists in China, Kyrgyzstan, Peru and Argentina, and travelled to many countries which produce animal fibres. Published peer reviewed papers exceed 150. He has over 100 science co-authors, a testament to his ability to collaborate with a wide variety of scientists. Show less

His work also includes assessment of carcass production from goat production grazing systems and how farmers can optimise the carcass quality from their goat enterprises. He has considerable experience in assisting a range of new industries develop business plans and in their implementation. He was responsible in assisting the development of new industries as part of the Specialised Rural Industries Program Management Team.He was Head of the Fibre Quality Department of the Victorian Institute of Animal Science, Department of Primary Industries, leading a team managing fibre testing laboratories, investigating higher quality export wool and a variety of field projects.
