I’ll never forget the meeting during that difficult season. Coach calmly walked in, moved to the front, and began speaking.I am incredibly fortunate to have had incredible coaches and leaders in my life who have helped mold me both personally and professionally. However, I had one coach who impacted me at an impressionable and challenging time, and whose lessons I endeavor to put into practice to this day. This is the lesson he put forth:“Each one of you are painters and each of you hold a paintbrush. Your life is the canvas you put on display for everyone to see. Picture your life right now. What does it look like? What are doing to improve the lives of those around you? Because if you’re not satisfied, here’s the great thing about painting… you can take that brush and improve upon it.”The lessons within those few sentences are profound: reflect, learn, and move onward – stronger and more determined than before.Coach would unexpectedly pass from this world, but his legacy and impact live to this day. I have tried to incorporate his many lessons into my daily life, whether it was leading a team of Green Berets in foreign lands, or coaching my son’s flag football team.
