From 2011 through 2012, I was responsible for the infrastructure automating the pre-silicon testing of Nvidia’s Tegra processor. The system consisted of multiple Python applications and a large MySQL database. I made several critical performance improvements and database changes to support an increasing transaction rate as well as customer driven enhancements to ensure critical milestones were met.From 2012 to present, I have been developing client / server applications using RESTful web services. I am responsible for the application architecture and development of a second generation REST API in Java, and a re-write of the user interface from JSP to a rich client based on EmberJS. I am currently learning Hadoop and developing extensions for Apache Pig to support advanced business intelligence for our engineers.Related to this work, but on my own time in open-source, I am developing a web application using a MongoDB / OSGi / Jersey / EmberJS stack (https://github.com/BryanHunt/web-in-a-box). It is intended to be an example of how to build a complete application including security, user management, and object storage.

Advisory Engineer

From 1995 through 2001, I worked as part of the simulation and verification team for IBM’s POWER system hardware. I was responsible for testing the L2 cache controller, system bus controller, and chip power-on-reset functions of the X7 chip. My work on X7 continued in the lab where I was responsible for bring-up and hardware testing of X7. Following this project, I worked on the simulation and verification of several memory subsystem units in the POWER 4 CPU. This testing required the development of many interface monitors, unit monitors, and bus drivers in C++ to verify the functionality of the design. I was also responsible for much of the power-on-reset simulation and testing of the POWER 4 CPU.From 2002 through 2003, I developed a C++ framework, that is now the core of IBM’s hardware verification. I was the primary architect of the framework and developed most of the core components. These components included a workflow engine that defines and controlls all of the stages of a simulation. This framework has been used in the verification of hardware that is shipping in I, P, and Z systems today.In 2004 I became the technical lead for the Hardware Developer’s Workbench (HDWB). I was responsible for the vision and architecture of HDWB. HDWB is an Eclipse-based (Java) tool that controls the automation of the simulation and verification of IBM’s hardware. The tool provides capabilities for managing and configuring thousands of tests to be executed manually or automatically. Since much of hardware testing is inherently random, tests may be continuously executed 24/7 which can generate millions of results with thousands of fails to triage daily. HDWB provides advanced fail triage through database queries, data mining, and automation. HDWB also supports users working on multiple projects across multiple geographies.

Research Assistant

I conducted research on a virtual memory system for a high performance parallel computer. The memory system combined for-address virtual memory and aliased page tables to eliminate both cache and TLB buffer consistency problems when integrated into a global memory / message passing architecture. I developed a trace-driven simulator in C++ to evaluate this memory system.

From August 1986 to December 1989, I had two co-op work assignments: Tranet Station 554, Pretoria, South Africa, and Tranet Station 558, Mahé, Seychelles. I was responsible for daily operation and maintenance of the satellite tracking station. Following these co-ops, I trained other students prior to their co-ops at various satellite tracking stations.From January 1990 to December 1990, I worked on the Gated Unauthorized Access Restriction Device (GUARD). GUARD was an embedded system deployed to remote satellite tracking stations to prevent unauthorized access and automate data collection. I developed much of the software that automated the monitoring of the satellite receiver including data collection and transmission to a central server. I also worked on a central monitoring station that could check the status of GUARD systems and perform administrative tasks.From January 1991 to August 1993, I worked on the A35M Astrolabe. This project was a precision opto-mechanical instrument used for determining the local gravity vector by tracking stars. I developed portions of the hardware and software for several of the system components. I also helped develop the optical alignment procedures, and performed many field tests to prove the accuracy of the instrument.
