This job was very similar to my past experiences working for church youth groups in terms of duties and obligations. But at 2PC, I was specialized towards junior-high students, from rising 6th-8th graders. Everything I have learned regarding teaching, discipling, mentoring, organizing, planning, and communicating with students and their parents had to be refined to their specific age.

In this role, I was given the task of heading up contact work with all the middle and high school boys of the families who attend Southwood, as well as those who came to the youth group who weren't officially members of the church. I worked with a team of two other interns, both were girls who headed up that side of the contact work, and our supervisor to pursue opportunities in discipling and mentoring our kids; planning weekly gatherings and Sunday school lessons, bi-weekly devotionals, and monthly large, one-off events; teaching devotionals, Sunday school lessons, and leading small group discussions. In this job, I learned how effective working as a team can be when all the team members share a united goal and purpose, and are equally as passionate about that goal. No one person could have pulled off a successful summer, especially given the global pandemic we faced at the same time. But as a team, we were able to create a space for community to be fostered in a safe environment. I was able to practice relationship building skills necessary to reach the kids where they were at, as well as hone skills in communication and public speaking.
