About Trevor Burton

I love to create new things and bring ideas into reality. As a Mechanical Engineering Product Designer, I enjoy integrating the science of mechanical engineering with the form and aesthetics of graphic and industrial design. I have seven years of experience doing mechanical design, product development, prototyping, and R&D.I believe good product design and engineering is best done by a dynamic cross-functional team where specialized independent work is brought together into a collaborative vision. I have over ten years of SolidWorks design experience (CSWP), and seven years in industry designing for medical, military, and consumer products and devices. Leading projects from new concept generation, through to production has given me a robust understanding of the product development life-cycle.At university I gained a strong background in project management and leadership from various design teams. I continue to utilize these skills in leading the R&D on innovative new products, and as a mentor and direct supervisor of engineering co-ops.My passion for design and innovation derives from being an avid maker, tinkerer, and skill collector. I use these hands-on skills to guide new designs, make early proof-of-concept prototypes, and inform design-for-manufacture (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) considerations. In my spare time I enjoy traveling, photography, and playing various sports. ---⬥ BMO – University of Toronto National Scholar Alumni (full-ride scholarship).⬥ BASc. Mechanical Engineering: Specializing in Machine Design, Solid Mechanics, and Mechatronics.⬥ Hold the prerequisites to apply for a P.Eng.

  • Uoft Concrete Toboggan Design Team
    Mechanical Engineering Lead
Uoft Concrete Toboggan Design Team Feb 2012 - Feb 2013
    Toronto, Canada
The team competes in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR). GNCTR is Canada's oldest engineering competition and is attended by 20+ teams (400+ engineering students) from across the country. The basic premise is to design, build, and race toboggans with a running surface made of concrete, that must carry 5 riders down the hill and around a slalom course as quickly as possible. The toboggans must have steering and braking mechanisms, include a roll-bar, and weigh less than 300lbs. As the Mechanical Engineering Lead, I managed a team of peers through a year long mechanical design, analysis, and fabrication process. As a part of this I took charge of the CAD modeling and performed the FEM analysis to ensure a safe toboggan was designed. After completing mechanical drawings for every part I led the team members through the complete fabrication and assembly of the final toboggan. At the competition in Vancouver I made technical presentations to the judges and took the 'brake operator' job while racing the toboggan. We won national awards for Best Performing Toboggan, Best Braking, 2nd Best Steering, and 2nd Overall Team, amongst others. This toboggan was reused the following year by the UofT alumni team to win 'Best Alumni Team' at GNCTR 2014 in London, Ontario.
