At the end of the quarter, instead of a final exam, the students did an oral presentation of a Federal government department or independent agency of their choice which detailed the history of the department/agency, functions of three agencies within the department, mission statements, principal publications of the department/agency, and regional offices located in the student's home state.

    The department, Government & Business Information Services (now Government Information Services), with its own public services desk, consisted of the Federal Documents Regional Depository, the State of Mississippi Documents Depository, and the Business Reference collection. Duties included but were not limited to: Reference Desk Services: Worked 14 hours per week at the GBIS Desk providing reference services to patrons using paper, fiche, and electronic services including the Internet. Stacks Supervisor/Maintenance: Coordinated stacks control and maintenance over the departmental collection and made sure the stacks are accessible to the patron. Student Supervisor: Supervised 12 - 16 student workers per semester, hired student workers, arranged student schedule, calculated the student payroll, and made assignments to student workers as needed.Needs & Offers Supervisor: One of the responsibilities of the Regional depository of federal documents includes the addition and discarding of Federal document titles. The Regional depository oversees maintenance of the selective depositories in the state. Selective depositories are only obligated to maintain the current five years of documents in their collection. Once the fifth year arrives; the selectives send a list of titles that need to be discarded to the Needs & Offers Supervisor at the regional depository. The supervisor goes over the list and checks the collection to see if there are any gaps in the collection. Once the supervisor has perused the list, the supervisor requests the selective what titles are needed from the list. This is the Federal documents depositories’ version of collection development.Website Manager:Also maintained and coded the department’s web page (http://www.olemiss.edu/govinfo/) and did troubleshooting of computer terminals and printers in the department.
